Smart transportation for energy saving operation by intentionally driving slowly

8/4/2023

Recently, ISO has released a new standard to guide the orderly progress of smart city construction.

Smart city refers to the use of intelligent technology and innovative solutions to improve the living environment of residents and build a modern residential city.  The effective management of public transportation operation is part of the construction of smart city.

ISO 37167 Smart Community Infrastructures — Smart Transportation for Energy Saving Operation by  This section explains how to manage the speed of mass transit operations so that it can minimize the consumption of energy during operations.  The guide covers a wide range of vehicles, including trains, buses, trucks and ferries.

According to Dr. Hiroyuki Sakai, convenor of the expert group that developed the standard, there are many operational parameters for public and freight transportation, and effective management can ensure operational efficiency and reduce energy consumption.  It is well known that driving at high speeds consumes more energy than driving steadily and slowly.  The reasonable arrangement of speed can guarantee the effective benefits of low consumption and low cost under the same conditions, and also play a positive role in environmentally friendly development, which is a win-win situation.  ISO 37167 is just one of many standards that help cities deliver smart transportation. It supports the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS), including Affordable clean Energy (SDG 7), Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11) and Climate Action (SDG 13).

ISO 37167 was developed by ISO/TC 268/SC 1 and its secretariat is the Japan Industrial Standards Survey Committee (JISC).
